Farflung tips: finding the answers nobody else picks

These Farflung tips help you score more kilometres by finding correct answers other players overlook. The short version: skip your first idea, look at small countries and island nations, and read the prompt’s exact wording. Below are six tips with real data from 19 official Farflung expeditions.

The method

How to use these Farflung tips on any prompt

  1. 1

Name the obvious answer, then skip it

The first country that comes to mind came to everyone else’s mind too. Use it as a safety net, not your pin.

  2. 2

    Scan the map’s small places

Zoom into Europe’s microstates, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Most Farflung-tier answers are small.

  3. 3

    Check the prompt’s exact wording

Words such as “official”, “by land” or “today” decide edge cases. A rare pin that breaks the wording scores zero.

  4. 4

Pick the rarest answer you are certain of

If two candidates fit, choose the less famous one. If you are unsure, fall back to the safe answer.

1

Let the first answer go

The most useful Farflung tip is to distrust your first idea. If a country jumps to mind in a second, it jumped to mind for thousands of other players too, and it will land in the lowest tier. Keep it as your fallback, then spend a few seconds looking for something less obvious that still fits.

2

Think small — microstates fit more prompts than you expect

The world has 25 countries smaller than 1,000 square kilometres, and they turn up in a surprising number of answer lists. Because players rarely picture them, they tend to be high-tier answers whenever they fit.

3

Remember the island nations

About 32 small countries have no land border at all. Prompts about the equator, the tropics, languages or monarchies all have island answers most players forget: Kiribati, the Maldives and São Tomé and Príncipe sit on the equator; Comoros, Seychelles and Vanuatu have French as an official language.

4

Look for the facts that break the pattern

Many Farflung prompts reward one surprising fact. The euro, for example, is used by several countries that are not EU members:

Landlocked prompts have 45 valid answers, including San Marino and Vatican City. Know a few of these exceptions and you always have a rare answer ready.

5

Learn the countries players overlook most

Across 95 prompts in the official game, some places are valid again and again yet are rarely picked — the best “secret weapons”. The chart below is updated automatically from the official Farflung answers.

6

Read the wording before you gamble

A rare pin is worthless if it breaks the rules. Watch for “official” (widely spoken is not enough), “by land” (sea borders do not count), “today” (a shop that closed does not count) and “country or territory” (only then do places such as Greenland count). When in doubt, take the safe answer.

Questions

Farflung tips FAQ

What is the best Farflung strategy?

+

Find one answer you are sure of first, then look for a rarer one that definitely fits. Only switch if you are confident: a wrong pin scores zero, while a common right answer still scores. Over many days, steady correct answers beat risky misses.

Which countries are good Farflung answers?

+

Small and lesser-known countries that fit many prompts: European microstates such as Andorra, Liechtenstein and San Marino, island nations such as Comoros, Nauru and Saint Kitts and Nevis, and countries with surprising facts, such as Kosovo using the euro. The table on this page lists the ones players pick least often in the official game.

How do I get better at Farflung quickly?

+

Play Farflung Unlimited in Wander mode and study each reveal. The same rare countries come up again and again, so after a few dozen prompts you will start thinking of them first.

Should I always go for the rarest answer in Farflung?

+

No. Rarity only pays if the answer is correct. When a prompt depends on a fact you are unsure of, such as which country has a certain shop or animal, take the safe answer and save the risk for prompts you know well.
